Shytime Training in Wilmington, North Carolina

01/About

Shytime Training is a basketball development program rooted in Wilmington, North Carolina, built around a simple belief:

Basketball can develop far more than a player. It can develop a person.

Through intentional instruction, purposeful repetition, mentorship, accountability, and structured development, Shytime Training helps athletes improve their game while developing the discipline, confidence, character, and leadership that extend far beyond the basketball court.

Basketball is the game.

The court is the classroom.

Character is the curriculum.

It's Bigger Than Basketball.

02/Story

The Story Behind "Shytime"

Every basketball player dreams of hitting the game-winner.

For me, that dream became something I had the opportunity to live out on the floor at UNC Wilmington.

During my time as a Seahawk, students and members of the Wilmington community began calling me "Shytime." The name became associated with those moments when the game tightened, the pressure increased, and every possession mattered.

But what people see in the final seconds is only the result.

They don't always see the hours before it.

  • The repetitions.
  • The missed shots.
  • The corrections.
  • The footwork.
  • The discipline.
  • The preparation.
  • The confidence built one workout at a time.

That is what Shytime came to represent.

Being clutch is not simply about making one difficult shot. It is about preparing yourself so thoroughly that when your moment comes, you are ready for it.

That philosophy became the foundation of Shytime Training.

I started Shytime Training to give back to the game—and to the Wilmington community—that gave so much to me.

Whether an athlete is learning the fundamentals for the first time, competing for a varsity position, preparing for college basketball, or simply trying to become the best player they can be, the mission remains the same:

Because basketball development is about far more than what happens when the lights come on.

It is about who you become during the work nobody sees.

Teach the game.

Build confidence.

Develop discipline.

Prepare for the moment.

That is Shytime.

Prepare before the pressure.

Trust the work.

Be ready when your moment comes.

03/Mission

Our Mission

Our mission is to develop complete athletes through high-level basketball instruction, structured progression, individualized coaching, intentional mentorship, and character development.

From young athletes learning the fundamentals to advanced players preparing for higher levels of competition, Shytime Training meets athletes where they are and challenges them toward where they can go.

We believe basketball is one of life's greatest classrooms.

  • Every practice teaches preparation.
  • Every repetition teaches patience.
  • Every correction teaches humility.
  • Every mistake creates an opportunity to learn.
  • Every challenge develops perseverance.
  • Every teammate creates an opportunity to serve.
  • Every victory teaches gratitude.
  • Every defeat creates an opportunity for growth.

Our purpose is not simply to produce more skilled basketball players.

Our purpose is to help develop disciplined competitors, accountable teammates, confident leaders, and young men and women prepared to positively influence their families, schools, teams, and communities.

Because success is measured by more than what you accomplish.

It is also measured by who you become.

04/Philosophy

Our Philosophy

Basketball Is the Classroom

We don't believe great development comes from simply running athletes through drills.

We teach.

We demonstrate.

We correct.

We repeat.

We explain.

We compete.

We apply.

We grow.

The goal is not for an athlete to memorize a workout. The goal is for an athlete to understand the game.

We want athletes to understand their footwork.

  • Understand their balance.
  • Understand their shot.
  • Understand spacing.
  • Understand timing.
  • Understand decision-making.
  • Understand preparation.
  • Understand their mistakes.
  • And eventually understand themselves well enough to recognize problems, make adjustments, and take greater responsibility for their own development.

Our development philosophy is simple:

  1. Learn it.
  2. Practice it.
  3. Understand it.
  4. Apply it.
  5. Trust it under pressure.

That is how preparation becomes confidence.

And that is how confidence becomes performance.

05/Fundamentals

Fundamentals Before Flash

We don't chase shortcuts.

We build foundations.

Before advanced moves come balance, footwork, coordination, control, and understanding.

Before consistency comes repetition.

Before confidence comes preparation.

Before leadership comes responsibility.

Great basketball is built from fundamentals performed exceptionally well.

Our athletes are challenged to master the details that make everything else possible.

Learn it correctly.

Repeat it intentionally.

Execute it consistently.

Apply it under pressure.

The best players never stop learning.

The greatest competitors never stop growing.

06/Values

The Three Pillars

Accountability. Toughness. Discipline.

We don't just build better players. We build stronger people. Every drill, workout, correction, conversation, and competitive moment at Shytime Training is anchored by three core values.

01

Accountability

Own your actions. Own your effort. Own your response.

Accountability begins with responsibility.

Own your preparation.

Own your attitude.

Own your effort.

Own your mistakes.

Own your response.

Own your development.

Mistakes are not something to hide from. They are opportunities to learn.

Correction is not failure. It is part of development.

Coaches can teach. Parents can encourage. Teammates can challenge.

But ultimately, every athlete must decide what they will do with the opportunities and abilities they have been given.

Growth begins with ownership.

02

Toughness

Stay composed. Keep competing. Finish strong.

Toughness is more than physical strength.

It is the ability to remain composed, courageous, disciplined, and competitive when circumstances become difficult.

Mental toughness means thinking clearly under pressure.

Physical toughness means continuing to work when you are tired.

Competitive toughness means responding when the game challenges you.

True toughness does not need to be loud.

It is steady.

It is resilient.

It is prepared.

It keeps going.

03

Discipline

Do what development requires—consistently.

Motivation changes.

Discipline remains.

One workout does not create excellence.

One great game does not create consistency.

One mistake does not define an athlete.

Development is built through repeated choices.

Choices become habits. Habits shape character. Character influences results.

Discipline is the bridge between the athlete you are today and the athlete you are capable of becoming.

06/Preparation

Preparation Before Pressure

Pressure does not begin in the final seconds of a game.

Preparation begins long before them.

The game-winning shot begins with the first repetition.

Confidence begins with preparation.

Execution begins with fundamentals.

Composure begins with experience.

That is why Shytime Training emphasizes purposeful repetition rather than meaningless volume.

We want athletes prepared for the moments that matter.

Not because pressure disappears—but because preparation gives them something to trust when pressure arrives.

Preparation → Confidence → Pressure → Execution

Prepare before the pressure.

Trust the work.

Be ready when your moment comes.

08/Environment

The Shytime Difference

Private Environment. Purposeful Repetition. Personal Attention.

Shytime Training operates from a private, dedicated half-court basketball training facility in Wilmington, North Carolina. The environment is intentionally designed around focused player development.

  • No crowded public courts.
  • No unnecessary distractions.
  • No waiting for meaningful repetitions.

Every session is built around purposeful development and can incorporate:

  • Shooting Mechanics
  • Ball Handling
  • Footwork
  • Finishing
  • Defensive Technique
  • Basketball IQ
  • Decision-Making
  • Position-Specific Development
  • Game-Speed Repetitions
  • Competitive Situations
  • Confidence
  • Communication
  • Accountability
  • Leadership
  • Character Development

Training time is training time.

Every repetition should have a reason.

Every correction should teach something.

Every session should move the athlete forward.

We don't want athletes simply leaving tired. We want them leaving better.

08/Mentorship

More Than a Trainer

Every athlete deserves more than someone who can demonstrate a drill. They deserve someone willing to:

TEACH

CHALLENGE

ENCOURAGE

CORRECT

HOLD ACCOUNTABLE

RECOGNIZE PROGRESS

LEARN THROUGH FAILURE

GROW

At Shytime Training, coaching and mentorship belong together.

Basketball gives us the opportunity to teach lessons that extend beyond basketball.

Those questions matter on the court. They matter even more beyond it.

  • How do you respond when things don't go your way?
  • How do you treat teammates?
  • How do you receive correction?
  • How do you handle success?
  • How do you respond to failure?
  • What do you do when nobody is watching?
  • What happens when preparation meets pressure?

10/Foundation

Our Foundation

It's Bigger Than Basketball.

Talent matters. Skill matters. Athleticism matters. Competition matters.

But none of them are enough by themselves.

Talent without discipline can be wasted.

Confidence without humility can become arrogance.

Strength without self-control can become destructive.

Leadership without service becomes selfishness.

Ability creates opportunity. Character determines what we do with it.

That is why Shytime Training seeks to develop the whole athlete through principles of:

  • Accountability.
  • Toughness.
  • Discipline.
  • Integrity.
  • Humility.
  • Perseverance.
  • Courage.
  • Self-Control.
  • Leadership.
  • Service.

Basketball provides the environment.

Development provides the process.

Character gives that development meaning.

Our Guiding Principle

Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.

Colossians 3:23

At Shytime Training, excellence means more than talent.

It means taking responsibility for what you have been given.

Working with purpose.

Remaining teachable.

Accepting correction.

Persevering through difficulty.

Leading through example.

Serving others.

And pursuing excellence whether anyone is watching or not.

The goal is not perfection. The goal is faithful development.

11/Wilmington

Our Commitment to Wilmington

Shytime was shaped in Wilmington.

Shytime Training exists to pour back into Wilmington.

The community that supported the journey is now part of the reason for the mission.

We want Shytime Training to be a positive influence for athletes and families throughout the Wilmington community by providing purposeful basketball development, mentorship, encouragement, accountability, and leadership.

The goal is not simply to develop athletes who can contribute to winning teams.

Develop the Player.

Build the Person.

Strengthen the Community.
